Plunge Pool Installation in Marblehead, MA
A plunge pool suits Marblehead's tight lots. It can clear the town's 6-foot side and rear setbacks, and we plan the dig around ledge and salt air.

What to know before you start.
Rock is the first question. Bedrock shows up at or near the surface in much of town, so we probe the spot before settling on a location and price any ledge before work starts. A plunge pool needs a far smaller hole than a full-size pool, which matters when the rock is close.
Then the rules. Anything 24 inches deep or more needs a building permit, has to stay 10 feet from the house and out of the front yard, and gets a 48-inch barrier. In the Old Town and Gingerbread Hill, a barrier the street can see also answers to the OHDC fence guidelines, so picket or baluster styles make sense there. On the Neck and around the harbor, we check the Conservation Commission maps first, since the town enforces its own wetlands bylaw.

Local rules that can affect your plunge pool project.
Old Town & Gingerbread Hill fences
Fences top out at 6 feet, street-front fences at 42 inches, and a 6-foot fence must step down toward the street. Natural materials are expected. Picket, capped picket, flat board and baluster styles are considered appropriate. Lattice-capped and post-and-rail usually aren't.

Pools and hot tubs 24 inches or deeper need a permit and must be at least 6 feet from side and rear lines and 10 feet from the house, and not in the front yard. The barrier must be 48 inches or taller, with a self-closing, self-latching gate.

The gate has to be at least 36 inches wide and open away from the pool. Under the barrier, the gap to the ground can't be more than 2 inches over grass or gravel, or 4 inches over concrete.

Town guidance allows pool water into the street drains only when chlorine is below 1 part per million. Those drains run to outfalls on the ocean.

Can I drain a plunge pool into the street in Marblehead?
Town guidance says yes, once the chlorine level is below 1 part per million. The street drains empty to the ocean, so we'd test the water before it goes.
Will a summer water ban stop me from filling the pool?
Marblehead buys its water from the MWRA. Even in the dry summer of 2022, when nearby towns restricted outdoor use, the town didn't need to. We'd still check for any notice before a fill.
